The handwriting was on the wall. It clearly said that the time had come for a new kind of six-passenger car - one that would be more efficent in it's use of this earths space and materials than full-size cars of the past - one that would use a new standard engine that is smaller and more fuel efficient.
Tall Order.
And we made it all that tougher by vowing that the new efficiency would not come at the expense of room, ride, comfort and security.

The New Chevrolet.
There's never been a car quite like it.
It's a whole new ball game, and the shape of cars to come.
Enjoy yourself.

Full size Chevrolets were downsized in 1977,
leading the first wave of shrinkage that would hit
the entire domestic lineup in the next few years.

Downsized full-size Chevrolet sedans were 5.5 inches shorter overall
and 4 inches narrower--but 2.5 inches taller.
Both Impala and Caprice kept their "Big Car" look and
ample interior dimensions, but lost some 700 pounds.

Caprice's grille had a finer mesh pattern. Caprice also had wraparound marker lamps and small parking lamps inset down in the bumper.
